15 Christmas Movies You Must Watch

Updated: Dec 27, 2019

I don't know about you but I can't get into the holiday mood unless I have some good Christmas movies to watch in the evening, after a long, cold day. And nothing is better than to cuddle up on the couch with a cosy blanket, with a tea or hot chocolate and to enjoy a light movie.

In case you are still caught up in your job or you are in the holiday rush for presents, I have a special movie list that you can enjoy with your family. Get ready to relax, release and ease!

1. Christmas Jars - I saw this yesterday and I loved it so much! I had to start with this one. Based on Jason F. Wright's New York Times Best Seller novel, it tells the story of reporter Hope Jensen, who uncovers the secret behind "Christmas Jars" - jars filled with money and given anonymously to people in need. Trust me, it's the perfect Christmas movie!

2. Finding Father Christmas - This is the first movie out of a beautiful trilogy: Engaging Father Christmas and Marrying Father Christmas. The story follows Miranda's life, who was raised by her mother but orphaned at a young age at Christmas. She finds a clue that will lead her to the truth about her father and it will change her entire life.

3. Romance at Reindeer Lodge - More of a 'classic' Christmas movie, Romance at Reindeer Lodge is set up in Vermont, in a picturesque lodge with no wifi or mobile signal. Although the narrative can be easily guessed, the movie shows real struggles, touches on perfectionism and altruism, making this an ideal Christmas movie.

4. The Spirit of Christmas - As the title suggests, this is a mystery movie but is very intriguing, with a touch of the typical Christmas magic. Emotionally frigid attorney Kate Jordan reluctantly accepts an end-of-the-year assignment to get a reputedly haunted inn appraised and sold by year's end. By and by she meets Daniel, the resident ghost who, for the past ninety-five years, inexplicably returns to life each December during the twelve days of Christmas.

5. A Christmas Prince - Enhancing what Christmas is about, this movie is great for the holiday season! Followed by A Christmas Prince - The Royal Wedding and A Christmas Prince - The Royal Baby, this trilogy is slowly becoming THE Christmas movie around Netflix. Also, for my Romanian friends, this movie is filmed at Peles Castle - the perfect winter destination!

Available on Netflix

6. The Holiday Calendar - If you are in the mood for some Christmas magic, grab your hot chocolate and watch this movie! A struggling but talented photographer inherits an antique holiday advent calendar, the contents of which seem to predict the future. I love that this movie approaches the struggles of the creative field and it has a less superficial narrative.

Available on Netflix

7. The Princess Switch - Competing in a Christmas baking competition in Belgravia, a Chicago baker bumps into the prince's fiancée -who looks just like her. They end up switching lives, only to realise that no one's life is perfect. A great romance that will make you feel grateful for what you have, something that we usually overlook during the Christmas rush.

Available on Netflix

8. Holiday Rush - Following the idea of gratitude, Holiday Rush changes our focus from presents and 'what' to family and 'who' at Christmas time. A movie about a family that needs to downsize and approach a simpler life right before Christmas will surely be heartwarming for many of you!

Available on Netflix

9. The Knight Before Christmas - After a sorceress transports medieval knight Sir Cole to present-day Ohio during the holiday season, he befriends Brooke, a kind science teacher who's been disillusioned by love. Brooke helps Sir Cole navigate the modern world. As he and Brooke grow closer, Sir Cole begins to wonder just how much he wants to return to his old life.

Available on Netflix

10. Maggie's Christmas Miracle - This has a more realistic tone, as the main character, Maggie, associates Christmas with trouble due to her challenging past. Of course, a Christmas miracle will take place and Maggie will get reconnected with her childhood sweetheart who will change everything for her. A beautiful family movie!

Available on Diva / Hallmark

11. The Holiday - In London, Iris Simpkins writes a wedding column in a newspaper and nurtures an unrequited love for her colleague Jasper Bloom. Near Christmas, she is informed that Jasper is engaged to marry another colleague, and her life turns upside down. In Los Angeles, the movie-trailers maker Amanda Woods has just split with her unfaithful boyfriend Ethan and wants to forget him. Through a house exchange website, Amanda impulsively swaps her mansion for Iris' cottage in Surrey for the holidays. This will definitely be your favourite comedy this Christmas! A must see!
